This is very well presented and it's incredible that they are working on preserving the Monitor from the Civil War as well as detailing a lot of information about the CS Virginia. Surprisingly enjoyable is the small craft display where they show a large variety of smaller boats along with a very rich description of there place and history. They have a couple of rooms with huge ship models with Incredible detail and variety especially ocean liners. If you really want to see everything here allow four hours.
Fascinating museum with so much to see! Admission is only $1 and to get the full experience you should expect to spend a few hours here. It's split up into many different sections so if you just want to visit a few you will still learn a lot. The staff are also very friendly/knowledgeable about the exhibits.
Without a doubt one of the nicest and most detail rich museums I have ever been to. There was so much to explore and discover that we simply could not take it all in within the 3 hrs we spent wondering around. You truly feel as though you are stepping into the past (and future) as it relates to ships of all kinds. Highly recommend!
America’s cup yacht is here… Amazing! Can’t believe they are restoring the monitor! A great museum which I don’t think is very well-known. Perhaps a best kept secret! Highly recommend!
Completely transformed over the last 10 years to focus on the Monitor as it’s prime exhibit. Includes the turret and a large number of artifacts, plus a full size model of the entire ship outdoors and a full sized model of the turret indoors. The real thing is there undergoing preservation for years with good progress, but you can barely see it since it is under water. Beyond that, it has a huge Americas Cup yacht so big that even its own building is too small, a few small boats that now have an climate controlled warehouse, and an amazing set ships models.
