Beautiful area, definitely worth seeing.
Not surprisingly, this is a rather wet place. While there are some higher lands near the north parking lot off of Hwy 18, I suggest visiting via the east parking lot off Bear Hole Road. Park and walk west towards the access road - look for the gate. This takes you over a drumlin to a meadow between two drumlins. Continue west up the the next drumlin for an overview of the Tamarack swamp. Next time I will bring waders...

Jefferson Tamarack Swamp Mound. According to Jefferson County documents, there is a long (several hundred feet) effigy mound, most likely panther, on the wooded island.
The lance-tipped darner was found at the Jefferson Tamarack Swamp State Natural Area. From downtown Jefferson, drive 1.2 miles east on Hwy 18. Turn south (right) onto County Hwy Y and drive 3.3 miles to a small parking area on your left.
