St. Andrew's by the Lake Church

A Beautiful Landmark to visit when in Toronto, this Wooden Church is in excellent condition for being built in 1884. Its Architect, which was styled on designs usually used for Cottages and Summer Hotels lead to a somewhat Gothic and Medieval finishing which is stunning to look at in these modern times.

This wooden church was built in 1884 at a cost of $2,000. Mr. A.R. Dennison was the architect. A moving force behind the construction of an island church was The Most Reverend Arthur Sweatman (1834-1909) who later became Lord Bishop of Toronto, Lord Archbishop of Toronto [1907 - 1909], and Primate of All Canada [1907 - 1909]. The island church functioned as the Bishop's chapel-of-ease in the long summer idyll of the last century. Some of Toronto's leading families such as the Masseys and Gooderhams assisted in bringing about the establishment of the church during their summers on Toronto Island.

A beautiful old community church on the island, across the lagoon from RCYC. Has exquisite stained glass. In the winter hosts Canzona, a classical music ensemble once a month, with a very nice lunch provided prior to the concert. In the springtime the Strawberry Social with Silent Auction is a must.

Wonderful old church. The grounds are lovely. The city does booking for the fire pit, which is an incredible experience. Go fully prepared. Best the water taxis will drop you off at the spot and pick you up afterward. The view of the city at night with a fire is incredible. Very awesome. Visiting the island try to score this fire pit.

Great little church. I photographed a wedding there last October and couldn't have been more pleasantly surprised by the quaint interior and lovely atmosphere. Recommended to all!
