金山蔵の焼酎 A Shochu brewery situated in a quiet hillside used to be a mine back in the days. The best way to get there is to drive. It took us about 50 mins to drive from Kagoshima.
There is the famous train that takes you to inside the mine and tour the inside.
There is also a Shochu shop where you can buy their various famous and award winning Shochu, Ume-Shochu, Litchi+Shochu and other liquors.
There is also a cafe where you can enjoy a cup or tea or coffee or some light food.
The brewery and shop are beautifully constructed with a mix of new and old Japanese architecture styles.
Although this is a far place, everything here and down the dungeon are 100% worth visiting. See the photos and you will know why. Better you have cars and drive there, if not, you will not be able to leave. But for the last resort, the kind ladies in the souvenirs office can help you call Taxi too.
We came on a Monday morning, and we had the trolley train all to ourselves. The train driver cum tour guide used very simple English words to explain to us, but most of the exhibits are easy to understand. It was a very enjoyable experience. Don’t forget to try some sochu at the souvenir shop
It is a nice place to know how the mining industry before here.
