“In 1835 Edward Bligh, the 5th Earl of Darnley, attempted to demonstrate to some of his estate workers the correct way to use an axe. In the process he severed one of his toes, and died of tetanus some days later. Lady Darnley had a stone monument erected at the spot where the accident took place, surrounded by eight yew trees - this became known as the 'toe monument'. Since then the site has become overgrown and much damaged by vandalism and neglect. All that now remains are a few stones surrounded by the now considerably larger yew trees.”

“Very enthusiastic and knowledge staff. Great display of mosquitoes and their history. Lots of other DH planes and artifacts too. The site has its own fascinating story too. This is a great local asset.”

“I enjoyed my time here looking at the vessel close up and taking photos, looking out across the river. It is quite a social location, people were sitting around on the benches chatting and families having a bite to eat. A pleasant afternoon.”

“Very specious, nice setting and beautiful views as the planes land to Gatwick. Despite the fact that it’s close to the airport, it is very quite. Secure, locked gate. The managers are very welcoming and helpful. We travelled in a caravan, didn’t use the facilities so can’t comment on that. Well recommended, we definitely visit again!”

“First I should mention I have visited annually for some time and have been fascinated by the sculpture in the photos. Each year the foundation presents different elements of Moore's work and the exhibition's for this year were about to finish when I visited. The photos are of the works in the grounds which I enjoy and hopefully give you a flavour of what you will see. For me the whole place is very special, they serve nice tea and coffee and excellent cake, pick a day with nice weather and either use sat-nav to find it or plan your route carefully. I do recommend touring his house if you are a first time visitor and again for the first timer follow the sculpture in the sequence in the guide. Finally it's worth wearing shoes that allow you to walk in fields, some excellent work are often surrounded by sheep.”

“Lovely 2 hrs at the enchanted woodland, lots of creative play with plenty of arts and crafts activities to keep a 4 and 5 year old amused. They loved decorating wands, making potions. Chasing the goblins and the games were fun. Loved the bow and arrows, crossbow and slingshot which made their day”

“Thoroughly enjoyed my visit but marked down a star as the utility tap didn't have sparkling water and the trees in the back are too dense.”

“Amazing museum, so much to see and do. Staff are really friendly. It's definitely a good place to go on a rainy day, probably more suitable for adults and older children. We were lucky when visited as it was a sunny day so we were able to enjoy the outside aircraft too. As it's so close to Gatwick it's also an aircraft spotters paradise too will planes taking off and landing every few minutes.”
