Nice little museum close the the historic Folsom town center. Parking is 10$, but it's well worth the visit as it is an amazingly preserved hydro electric station that wasone of the first to generate electricity for Sacramento back in 1895. It was operational until the 50s and then became a preserved park hence all the original equipment from the era.
We really enjoyed two free guided tours here. The first in a the very well appointed visitors center and the second in the original powerhouse. It was fun learning about the significant role this place has in the history of large scale power generation. There is a modest $10 parking fee that can be avoided by using the free parking garage in historic Folsom. The powerhouse is not heated so if you go on a chilly day be sure to wear a coat.
This was our first trip to Folsom in over 20 years, and then it was for work. This time on vacation visiting. For those interested in history, technology our just some scenic short walking this is a must see. This was the first hydro project in California in 1895.
Love this historical place because it still has so much intact! The museum portion is fun for kids to push buttons and learn about electricity. The actual powerhouse is amazing, and the history of how they got everything constructed and shipped is epic. Lots of historical photos. The docents are great - our recent one with a PhD in electrosomethingcrazy was fascinating to listen to and explained the processes that took place when the powerhouse was operational. Very educational.
A fabulous trail for biking, horseback, walking and jogging. It's perfect for those who like the outdoors. It's well maintained, popular and friendly.
