If you love helicopters, man you've missed it if you don't stop in and take the tour. Even for a fixed wing guy, it was Uber interesting.
Lots of interesting helicopters there. Some are prototypes you won't see anywhere else. Volunteers here are very knowledgeable.
There's a "ancient" flight arcade game there. You kids will love it.
Lots of rare equipment dating back to the early days of rotorcraft flight. Staff is friendly and knowledgeable, and includes pilots and maintenance personnel.
Wow! A gem in the rough.
Chip, the docent made this place come alive. His first question is, "How much time do you have?" If you answer, "We are not in a rush", that puts a huge smile on his face and be prepared to take a very in depth, fascinating trip though the history of helicopters, the history of the museum, and the interesting stories about how all these helicopters arrived at the museum, some of them personally flown there by Chip himself.
Be prepared to spend half an afternoon, but whether you are an aviation buff, or even have a slight interest in aviation, you will leave there with a smile on your face.
What was originally intended to be a short sight-seeing stop in Ramona ended up being a 2+ hour visit to the Classic Rotors Museum, which I found on Google search. The museum is a hidden gem located right alongside Ramona's airport with an abundance of history and incredible machines. Our docent showed us around with incredible enthusiasm and a wealth of fascinating information. This museum has some of the rarest, oddest, most iconic, and all-around fascinating collection of helicopters. Personally, every second at this place fascinated me. Make plans to stay a few hours and take in all the incredible history and detail! I will certainly be back for another visit - I'm already recommending this to friends and family as a must-see destination!
