“It is my honor and pleasure to write a review for Heidi Terrell, my mother’s Occupational Therapist (OT). From the moment she walked into our home, she entered our lives, again! Here is the background story: I opened my mom’s front door and Heidi Terrell looked very familiar. She said the same to me. I asked her where she had worked prior to Mt. Evans Rehab. She said she was a Cardiac Care (CCU) Nurse at Porter Hospital. That was our connection! My grandfather, years ago, had a leaking heart valve replaced with a pig valve. Heidi and our family all walked into his room right after his surgery and he blurted out, “I smell bacon!” We all laughed so hard. Her heartfelt laugh was never to be forgotten, even after many, many years. Now, let me tell you about this exceptional OT. Heidi asked my mom a few questions about how she getting along, how much she was able to do and what were here goals in the near future and long term. She absorbed the information with a truly genuine smile. My mom and Heidi had a connection! After a blood pressure check, pulse oxygen check, etc., Heidi started with mom. She emphasized safety, how mom should stand from her chair. Having her feet the width of her shoulders and “squaring” her body before standing. Such a soft, caring demeanor and because of the care my mother felt, she remembered every word after Heidi would leave after each visit. Mom learned how to safely walk step-by-step sideways, how to reach to open and close her curtains, which are in an awkward place. How to get behind her pellet stove to turn it on and off, it is very narrow to get to (she helped her gain independence again). When mom asked Heidi if she could show her how she walked up and down the stairs, she wanted to ensure she was doing it properly, Heidi did not say, this is part of “physical therapy,” she said with a smile, “show me” and assisted her to confirm it was correct or gave suggestions for safety. Heidi helped mom, maneuver in and out of the shower, how to reach deep into the kitchen cabinets, she showed mom how counter-balance was so very important to unloading the dishwasher as well as soooo many other areas of her home. Learning to use a cane, down the stair(s) that did not have railings was very important. Reaching with a quart jug of water to water all of mom’s plants, again, very important to not fall on hardwood floors. I realize all these things are like a grocery list of OT items being learned, but if it helps another person to know what to request from their therapist, then I am so happy to be adding these. Most of these were items that Heidi realized were important to my mother and very important for safety sake to me to know my mom is going to progress after surgery without injury. I have always believed that giving your heart when someone has had surgery or been sick makes all the difference. Being an Occupational Therapist, in my opinion, is not just teaching the safe way to do things, it is entering a person’s home and knowing if this were your mother, father, sister, brother or best friend, that you treat this person as family, with respect and all the care and love in your heart. You must look around and find the needs of the client you are taking care of – not just do the 1-6 checklist your company or office give you. Every home and every person’s needs are different. An exceptional person sees this. Heidi makes a difference. She cares and through her heart, she teaches her clients more than words can express. My mother looked forward to her OT sessions, Heidi is the reason. I truly can say, we love her and are so blessed she walked back into our lives! God bless you, Heidi and thank you Mt. Evans for such a wonderful experience. Kimberly Haight (daughter of client)”

Health

“My accident was serious and my injury, substantial. After spending a full week in St Anthony’s Hospital in Frisco, I was transferred to Life Care Center of Evergreen for three full weeks. My first impression was that the Center was starting to show its age, but within a couple of days, my viewpoint quickly focused on my care and upon those who became responsible for my recovery. Upon leaving the facility, I realized that I had had “around the clock” attention from some of the best nurses, nurses’ assistants, occupational and physical therapists, and administrators in the field. They took a personal interest in me, monitoring my diet, exercise, sleep, cleanliness, physical fitness, and so much more. (Can you believe: with a smile, Kim brought me a much appreciated cup of hot coffee at 5:30 each morning.) I made considerable physical and emotional headway under the care of these folks before I departed for Nantucket. It is all about the care! Life Care of Evergreen knows what it is doing.
