Mary McLeod Bethune Beach Park

Address: 6656 S Atlantic Ave, New Smyrna Beach, FL 32169, USA

Park

“Very nice little oceanfront park, originally built by African Americans during the segregation era as a vacation spot for African Americans. A plaque commemorates the founders and tells a little about the history and historical significance. The park is owned by state/local government which keeps it modernized and well-maintained. An interesting feature of the beaches in this area is that you can drive your car up and down the beach (slowly, and for a fee - $20, I think)”

Mary McLeod Bethune Park West Side

Address: Ladyfish Ave, New Smyrna Beach, FL 32169, USA

Park

“Great little out-of-the-way spot that might be overlooked by anyone but locals. It is small but it has a nice wooden walkway on the lagoon where you can fish or watch for manatees and dolphins. We saw several manatees and one very aggressive dolphin that rammed a kayak causing concern with the lady occupants. I tried to get pics of the dolphin but there is a delay on my camera phone and when I would snap a pic when it came up for air it would not be visible when the shutter opened. It also has a very nice piece of playground equipment for the kiddies. This is truly a little hidden gem.”

“What a fabulous place to take your dog to play. Pack a lunch, put up a tent, play some music, and enjoy. Scenery is fantastic. Fishing, surfing, dogs playing and shells... everywhere... a must even if you don't bring your pooch. The boardwalks so much fun over the marsh... You will enjoy the pure beauty. I bike down every morning. Perfect ride on the beach. So by bike, foot or car if ya gotta a pooch, check it out. You'll love this hidden gem. And don't forget a bag to put the shells in. You'll need one.”

“Hidden jewel. 1 bathroom for men and 1 for women. Shower to wash off. Bike racks but parking is only about 20 spaces. $20 per car from 8-5. After Memorial Day there is a life guard on duty. Be mindful there is a huge pipe coming out of the water from oil drilling. No smells just construction guys working but a great spot. There is a hidden boardwalk that takes u to a picnic pavilion area. No power but it is covered. if u stand up u can see the beach. On the street right Behind the parking lot there is free parking. Comes in handy when the tide is high and the lot is full and they stop cars from going on the beach. You will also find quite a few local surfers at this location.”

“Thoroughly enjoyed my day on the beach here. There is no shelf drop off in the water. This makes it a good place for smaller children to get in the water. There are several restaurants and shops just off the beach. Restrooms are very large to allow room to change. There are several showers for rinsing off. Cars are allowed on the beach and there is a driving lane between where most people set up and the water. This requires you to be very attentive when walking to the water and back to your towel. I would definitely go back. I would like to take the time to explore the area just off the beach.”
