Local hot spot. BBQ is amazing, moist and flavorful. Warning, their sauce is vinegar based… I get mine without sauce. Slaw is amazing. Staff is friendly. None stop line from the time we got their until we left and it wasn’t because they are slow!
It's legendary. One must go there. One of the best in Georgia and the southeast. The stew is my favorite. And the hot BBQ sauce.
We decided to drive over and give this place a try, just on a lark. We are very happy that we did. I like BBQ but my wife just isn’t really a fan, so I was excited that she wanted to go. We got there and were a little concerned, because the building is rustic, but the concerns were unfounded. The inside is a little rustic, but sparingly clean and well maintained. There is a huge amount of indoor seating. The food was top notch, the Brunswick stew is the best (other than my mothers) that I have ever had. We went on a Saturday and it was CROWDED , we got into a long line, thinking it would take forever, but it wasn’t bad, probably 10-15 minutes, about what you would wait at a Cracker Barrel. If you like BBQ, you have to give this place a crack.
The food was delicious. The coleslaw is the best coleslaw that I've ever had. It was a great accompaniment with the BBQ. If I'm ever in the area again, I will definitely eat there.
I'm giving Fresh Air a four out of respect for the institution as I know it is beloved by many. But objectively I would normally give it a three as it's just not my kind of barbecue.
They've been in business since 1929 and there's a constant line during lunch time. I have friends who drive an hour each way once a month to eat fresh air barbecue. So it has its fans.
The key is they use a strongly vinegar-based sauce, and they do not have other alternatives. The last time I went I even brought my own sauce, but I just didn't care for the meat as much as many other places I go that have that style of barbecue. I found it a bit dry relative to what I normally enjoy.
Facilities are rustic and suitable for the type of restaurant. They have a nice expansion area with long tables and brand new bathrooms that makes it easier to eat inside than it used to be from old memory.
Fresh Air has so many advocates including some friends who consider themselves barbecue experts. So I'm going to say it's worth a stop and you can draw your own conclusion.
And no way should this be interpreted as demeaning or negative it's just not my kind of barbecue, nor that of my family and some of my other friends.
