A few months ago I was fasting as a way to truth-test Kierkegaard's words. Thirty-seven hours into the fast I began to wonder, "When and what will I eat?" At 3:00 AM on the third day a vision arrived that shook my brain with the authority of a high-summer thunderclap. I was standing on the surface of a lake and howling up at the solstice moon. A reply came from the cattails along the shore, but I can't share those words as they fall into the realm of private religion. The vision departed and at dawn I resolved to walk to the nearest donut shop, which happened to be La Boulangerie Marguerite. The coffee was fresh and hot, and I sat down to eat my way into well-being, into my best thoughts, into everything I most wished to be.”
