History is not there for us to like or not, it's there for us to learn from... I understand the sand will brush off, the salt will wash away, the tan will fade, but the memories will last a lifetime. So I take more pictures of us documenting our life and saving the memories.
1 hr & 15 mins from Henderson if taking Northshore Road via Lake Mead. 4wd advisable but our 2wd made it?!
Warning: Do not go when rain is expected. Keep right at St.Thomas Road - start of 3.3 miles dirt road - park at designated lot and hike down for 1 mile to reach the start of the St. Thomas Loop Trail. Enjoy the trail of Nevada's many ghost towns that was abandoned when Lake Mead first filled up in the 1930.
Awe inspiring site. Makes you think about the determination and hardiness of the people who settled here. The trail os easy, after the original drop onto the floodplain. I do not recommend it for the mobility impaired. It would be nice to have a few stone or concrete benches at the townspeople to reflect and rest for the return hike. The loop trail is approximately 2.5 miles.
Fun little trail to hike to see a bit of forgotten and then recovered history.
The trail could use a bit of maintenance as it's easy to go off inadvertantly, so watch where you're going.
St. Thomas once was 70 feet under water as part of Lake Mead. There are foundations and signs that explain things. To get there you need to drive on a dirt road for 3 miles. There is an outhouse near the trail. It is a short 2.5 mile loop. To get there from Las Vegas we took Lake Mead Blvd it is very scenic. There is a Lake Mead pay station or need a National Park Pass. The dirt road entrance is just outside the Valley of Fire State Park Lake Mead exit. Would be a great add on to a Valley of Fire visit.
