Very quiet, fun to walk up the crater and explore. The different types of lava rock are really interesting. Bummer to see gun shells and garbage. But it's not terrible, just disappointing.
The last few miles is narrow and a little rough but most SUVs shouldn't have a problem getting there. I took my full size truck and left some pin-striping. They are there to remember good times. I lost the hiking trail a few times on the way up but my dog has a better sense of direction than I do, so I let her take the lead. Really nice hike. I've never been to an area like this so for me I found it awesome! Not a lot of people out when I went. I only ran into two couples out there. My dog enjoyed the hike off the leash but didn't appreciate the dozen or so thorns I had to pull out. The only wild life I saw was birds. I went on this hike at the end of January. No wind. A little chilly with clear skies. I did go later in the spring where the temperatures were pushing 90 plus. Bring plenty of water. I wouldn't recommend the hike during the summer months. I'll be back.
Gorgeous place. Don't go in the summer and bring a high clearance truck or car and plenty of water. Verizon worked out there in March 2020.
Hike from road was unmarked but not too tough. Really surreal landscape that stands out from the desert.
Drove my Toyota Prius here (very carefully, not recommended). You should likely have a 4 wheel drive vehicle to get here.
Very interesting place. The drive to the crater is quite long on a dirt road, but the place is really worth a visit.
