We bought a historic one of a kind schoolhouse with good bones but no finish. The previous owner left an ambitious project half done-coffered ceilings in two classrooms. Calvin, Kevin, and crew were willing to use the materials we had on site and source the rest, which saved us some money. They didn’t just match the ceiling we already had, they vastly improved the design and durability. They also repaired badly done plaster and drywall, repaired busted up wainscoting, put in insulation when possible, and came up with an elegant solution for damage from an old radiator installation gone wrong.
His painter, Broc, works hard, is flexible, and listens to suggestions. Because of the unique lighting situation I could only see spots that were missed in the late afternoon sun, but Broc and Calvin didn’t hesitate to come back and take care of it until I was satisfied.
All his employees are gracious, highly skilled, and have a commendable work ethic. Sometimes it’s awkward to have strangers in your space day after day, but it was a pleasure to have them in our home.
Now the room is absolutely breathtaking. Anyone who enters or sees the photos cannot stop talking about how amazing it is. They tell me I did a great job and I always correct them. It’s our contractor. We hired Calvin again to work on the (enormous) exterior this summer.
Calvin Thomas has a good feel for historical buildings, the eye of an artist and the knowledge of a master craftsman. His goal is to be the best contractor you’ll ever hire.
So when you receive your estimate from Thomas Construction, remember you get what you pay for. We paid for the best, I can’t imagine a better result, and this beautiful room will outlive us all.

Calvin and his team did an amazing job framing a 20 foot high cathedral ceiling over our porch. It looks absolutely beautiful. It ties right in with the rest of the house so it looks like it’s always been there. Calvin arrived exactly when he said he would and finished so quickly. Very impressed! The work is high quality and it looks better than we imagined it. The quote he gave us is exactly what we paid, no extra costs. I would highly recommend him!

I write this review not as a contractor, but as a very competent "do it your-selfer." Even so, there are some tasks a homeowner just can't do. When we first purchased an old home, we made the mistake of assuming we could hire professionals to do the renovation and restoration work we wanted done but were unable to do ourselves, to our specifications. We were wrong. Our experiences with hiring contractors ran the gamut from no-shows for estimates to outright incompetentence- until we found Calvin.
Over the past 4 years we have hired Calvin to complete a number of jobs on our historic home including (but not limited to): porch restoration (complete with new stairs, columns, and railings), cedar shake siding repairs, storm window glazing and painting, and a full repainting of the house. Most recently we had Calvin replace a porch roof and repair areas of water damage to the soffits and moldings that the porch suffered as a result of the failure of the previous roofing job done by a "professional roofer with over 30 years in the business" which leaked extensively within two weeks of installation. All of the jobs we have had done by Calvin and his team have been well planned and carried out thoughtfully and competently using the correct materials and in keeping with the historic details of the home. He not only does great work himself, but also holds those he works with to the same high standards. He is straightforward, honest, reliable, and willing to take the time to discuss the projects in great detail to ensure the work is done to your liking.
Learn from our mistakes. If you value your home and want the work done properly, don't make the mistake of contracting with the cheapest bid on a job. You will end up paying for it in the long run. Instead, hire a true professional from the start. We have nothing but the highest praise for Calvin and his team and can very confidently recommend him for any work you need done.
