Twenty Decembers ago I asked my husband what special thing we could do to celebrate our 20th anniversary. On June 18, 1997 we drove with our children to Seagrove, North Carolina to look at pottery as a possible gift. After looking through five pottery shops out of the dozens and dozens, every one of us said "Let's go back to Lufkin Pottery!"

All four of us went into the shop and made the unanimous decision of choosing a beautiful pattern that combined a deep watermelon color with shades of blues and greens. After 20 years our pottery still looks new, still looks fresh modern and yet timeless. Sally Lufkin Saylor worked diligently over the years creating additions to our collection. After all, we have two daughters to divide the pottery amongst eventually.

One unexpected incredible gift came from my husband, who commented during the drive home, "Where will we store everything?" He then spent three months handcrafting a beautiful colonial oak hutch to display our dishes.

Two years later as our anniversary approached I asked my husband which of our daughters was going to inherit the hutch. After another three months my husband completed a companion corner hutch. I was so proud of my husband, so proud of the family and life we had built together. And I am so pleased that all four of us took that trip to Sea Grove in 1997.

Yesterday I asked my husband what special thing we might do to celebrate our 40th anniversary this coming June. We can't squeeze our two daughters and their husbands and our four grandchildren into one car now! I can't imagine a gift that has pleased us more over the years than the love and time that went into Sally's crafting our special dinner pottery by hand from the earth''s clay, and Ron's building two beautiful hutches for their display.
