“My career as a caregiver started in August of 2000. Over the years I have experienced various work environments and fellow caregivers. I have found the best way to see if I want to work somewhere is to see how happy the other employees are. Some places have caught on to this concept creating policy for its workers where they are always smiling and helpful. Those smiles fade as soon as doors shut and corners are turned. In the summer of 2014 A Way to Stay appeared to begin one on one care for a dying resident. The A Way To Stay employees caught my eye and sparked my curiosity. They were like the light of crystal reflecting the sun in an otherwise dark room. No matter when and who I encountered they always seemed happy. Not a fake, plastic smile but a smile that came from inside. Their smile was brightest when giving care. No one cut corners or looked for a way around their work. It wasn’t about doing their time and going home. These caregivers truly cared. As time went on I found myself going to the room of this resident just to be around them. Many places are quick to say how much they care. Yet so few do. They are as rare as a unicorn. After a lot of consideration, I searched A Way To Stay online and found the link to complete the application. As caregivers we don’t just do our job, we give our heart. If I was going to commit my heart to somewhere again I better make sure they were worthy of that, so I was honest. I was met with the understanding only fellow seasoned caregivers would have. This was the longest and best interview of my career. I started as a caregiver with A Way to Stay in March of 2015. After three years doing caregiving I can confidently say I made the right decision. There is no greater gift than that of caring for someone in need of help. As caregivers our diversity is our strength and is valued here. I personally enjoy working with older adults dealing with Dementia and late stages of life. Over the years I have seen many people go through the changes of Dementia and others leave this world. Now what makes us different here is we build relationships with our clients. On one case my client was no longer able to communicate their needs to us. Yet something was wrong. They were behaving differently. As I said earlier when a caregiver goes to work they go with their heart in hand. Seeing this status change I called the office. I remember packing an overnight bag for them, fighting tears in my eyes said “you are going to be okay.” They looked back, smiled and said “yes I am. Now give me a hug so I can go.” Calmly and quickly medical help arrived and my client was off to be checked out. I called the office back to let them know the outcome. I reverberated my report while trying to stuff down the tears. Devon cut me off and said “All of that is great. Now how are you?” Because when a caregiver provides care, we care. This is understood here. A caregiver with my heart and skill can provide care anywhere but why A Way To Stay? This is a place to grow. It is impossible to avoid the inspiration and motivation contained here. Mention an interest in learning and you are discussing your purpose. Say you need to change your availability to be home with your children more and new options are given to you. Experience a crisis in your personal life and there is a warm cup of tea waiting for you with a listening ear attached. Even better are when we make mistakes. We are met with the same listening ear and a chance to change. This is my first time working in home care. As I meet other home care workers I encounter the usual mistreatment we endure. Caregivers amazed to hear if my shift is cancelled in a certain time frame I am still paid. Going between cases I am paid. Shocked faces when Dana and Devon visit and I know who they are. Yes, there are employees who don’t even know who runs the place where they work. I always joke and say known them, I know their dogs. When we smile at A Way To Stay we smile we smile from the inside out.”

“Dr. Weasen and his staff were very friendly and professional. The doctor answered any questions I had and also explained about the different types of skin cancers and their categories. A minor procedure was quick and painless. Already have my yearly exam scheduled. Thank you for making my first trip to the dermatologist a pleasant one.”
