ICA is awesome! Great place to workout! Has been very beneficial towards my health!
The best CrossFit gym in the Phoenixville / Pottstown / Spring City area. The coaches know their stuff and safety is always a priority. This is not a highly competitive gym but more of a friendly place to get a great workout in a super positive environment.
Updated review: 12/6/2012
I'm now 3+ years into my CrossFit experience and I've continued to have a incredible time working out with the Iron Cross Athletics crew. Not only do we work hard together, but we have fun together outside of the gym. It's an incredible community that has been fostered by ICA's owners, John and Nikki.
Over the last 3 yrs, I have had the opportunity to visit more than a dozen gyms while traveling and the level of instruction at Iron Cross Athletics is top notch. Every workout begins with a warm up, a thorough instruction of the workout's movements (incl appropriate, safe scaling) and then we go. The programming varies between metcons & lifts on different days.
The best part about ICA is that all levels are welcome & encouraged! The membership is like family and we celebrate PRs, first pull-ups and muscle-ups all with the same excitement. In short, I'm grateful for the people Iron Cross Athletics has brought into my life.
And PS: that trail running past of mine hasn't suffered. In the last 3 years, I've run three different 50K races, completed a 40 mile race and a marathon all with the training and support of ICA.
Original Review: 2013
Full disclosure: I am an avid trail runner/ultra runner and had a handful of friends that participated in CrossFit.
So, the push to get more interested in CrossFit stemmed from a trail race. A friend of mine was running the same race & KICKED MY A$$. She had always been a solid runner, but she blew me away. At the finish, I asked, "so, what's different in your training?" Her response: "CrossFit."
The mister and me did a search of local CrossFit affiliates and came upon Iron Cross Atletics. We made an appointment to meet with the owner and learn more.
We met in the gym where there were a dozen or so men and women (all ages) working out. We sat down with John and talked about his background & experience in CrossFit, what ICA offers, what our fitness past was like and goals for exploring CrossFit. There was *no* pitch. It was a conversation, and I appreciated that. After about our chat, he invited us to experience some of the movements of CrossFit and to do a baseline workout: 500m row, 40 air squats, 30 sit ups, 20 push ups, and 10 pull ups for time.
I thought it was pretty cool. The mister saw the intensity on my face as I finished the pull ups and he knew we were signing up on the spot.
We committed to a 4-class fundamental series and a 6-month unlimited membership. The fundamental class is capped at 3 or 4 people and you are taught the proper techniques of weightlifting and given a taste of traditional workouts. Even though I had been a regular member of a gym for the better part of 13 years, I was never taught proper weightlifting techniques and rarely--if ever--did body weight bearing activities (push-ups, pull-ups).
I was intimidated for my first workout, but the coach made sure to introduce herself to me at the start of the workout and several other members did the same. Wow...what a great start. :-)
I began to get more involved and taking advantage of several workouts during the week. I even started to look forward to workouts more so than before. The members in my workouts were friendly, the coaches were well-equipped to teach and demonstrate the movements, and I *never* felt that our activity was unsafe. This is important, because you'll see there are plenty of articles with negative statements about CrossFit and that it's very dangerous.
The owners, John and Nikki, have in-depth experience in CrossFit (both from the participant and coach side). The membership at ICA represent a diverse background of life experiences, abilities and strengths. One across-the-board characteristic is that every member of ICA is ready to give you positive encouragement and help you do well. ICA is not a place for egos. ICA is a place to challenge yourself, have fun in the process, and see yourself improve (at your own pace). So much of this can be attributed to the environment fostered by the owners, as well as the coaches.
The best box I've ever been to.
I recently had to move and I've tried a few new places around me but none of them compare to what ICA offered. Hands down the best coaching you will find for the money. John (owner) is an amazing coach that truly cares about the form and mechanics of all his members. He instills this same mentality with all of his coaches as well. Simply great people to work with.
Going past the coaching, the community is top notch as well. When I first started, I expected to simply go work out but ended up making a bunch of friends. Any new members can expect to make good friends quickly and will have plenty of opportunities to hang out with people outside of a workout if they so desire. The owners routinely sponsor community events and get-togethers.
You can't go wrong with this tight-knit community.
As an older person looking to start exercising and having heard all of the horror stories about Cross Fit I decided to try a free class at Iron Cross Athletics as they were close to my work.
I couldn't have been more impressed with the owners and coaches, they stress safety in every movement while giving even the strongest members a real good workout. The staff and members form a real community that has been welcoming and fun. There are all kinds of fun "outside of the box" activities to support the club and community.
I love this place!
