Great park with a quaint playground, open field, and a wooded area with a pond.
Occupying a place of great honor at the geographical and spiritual center of Herron Island, Goodpastor Park is a hub of outdoor activity and excitement for island members and visitors alike.
The vintage children's playground harkens back to a time when safety concerns and greedy lawyers took a back seat to children's fun and adventure. With the the only operating open-sided steel merry-go-round in Washington state, a minor concussion is a small price to pay for enjoying such a treasure. The steel slide seems to touch the heavens, terrifying those that might consider taking a roll off the side of it -- with only a thin layer of ground up Goodyears to catch them below.
For those with a more competitive spirit, the combination pickle ball / basketball court provides a firm level surface for playing these games, with two spectator benches to support the cheering crowds.
The park also features a large, open, unmarked field -- perfect for games to be played in large, open, unmarked fields (and also for landing your helicopter or hot air balloon on the island). A baseball diamond in the corner is the ideal place to play America's pastime for those times you have 17 friends around and nothing else to do.
Lastly, the community center is an awe-inspiring structure, housing the ornate gilded offices of the HMC, a top-notch restaurant-style chef's kitchen, and an operational antique fire truck --- ready for service as soon as the fire district decides this island shouldn't burn to the ground.
