The handball courts said no skating but I always see kids in scooters in there, and honestly early in the AM when I attend the park I do roller skate in the handball court, the park workers who come don’t even bother me or anything actually most times they watch and then leave. Overall a nice park if you get there when it’s quiet!”

Park Lodging Restaurant

“This place is beautiful to visit even in winters. The place was quite cold when we went in December, but bearable. I would suggest taking a thick coat and gloves. It has all the amenities nearby the trekking mountain - there is a snack bar where you get bars, ice cream etc. There is a restaurant where you can eat good food. There is even an ice skating rank which is I feel is the highlight of the area. You can pay just $10 and skate there for 1 hour and 30 minutes. I would say pretty good deal. The trail itself takes about 2 hours. Had a wonderful time!”

Nordkop Mountain

Address: Hillburn, NY 10901, USA

Park

“Nordkop Mountain is located near Southwest end of Suffern - Bear Mountain trail (yellow markers). It offers excellent views of Suffern, nearby hills and highways. The trailhead is located on Orange Ave (Rt. 59) and can be reached by a car, Metro-North train (10 min walk from Suffern station) or Shortline Bus (5 min walk from a commuter lot parking). There is no trailhead parking, but plenty of commuter parking lots within a short walk. The climb is moderate-to-strenuous, less than a mile, with about 500 feet ascent, and can be completed in 1-2 hours. No special training or equipment is necessary. The top of the mountain is exposed rock, it’s not recommended to hike there during strong winds or thunderstorms. Also rain, snow or fallen leaves provide an added difficulty due to a slippery rocks. Suffern - Bear Mountain trail doesn’t meet another trail for more than 4 miles, meaning there is no option for a loop hike, only out and back. The entire SBM trail is about 25 miles and technically can be done in a long day, but it’ll be a strenuous hike. There are a few options for overnight hikes, with closest shelter (Stone Memorial) only 5 miles from the trailhead. Detailed and inexpensive trail maps can be obtained from New York New Jersey Trail Conference - local hiking organization. Do a search for “NYNJCT Harriman””

Doodletown trailhead

Address: Dunderberg Turnpike, Tomkins Cove, NY 10986, USA

Park

“Great trail to hike in the fall weather - no bugs and fresh cool air. However rocks were pretty slippery because of the previous night rain. Would definitely be very challenging and in some parts dangerous during Winter. Beautiful view of water fall and sound of streams running all along the trail. Nice spots for picnic. Though my 6-yr old made the entire Bridle path loop hike, it’s pretty rough (uphill and rocky) for younger kids.”

Bear Mountain Dock

Address: Tomkins Cove, NY 10986, USA

Park

“Quiet spot offering panoramic views of the Hudson River and the Bear Mountain Bridge. From Hessian Lake (where crowds congregate during the warm summer months), you can hike a trail that leads directly to this place. The hike took us 20 minutes.”

Hook Mountain Hawkwatch

Address: Valley Cottage, NY 10989, USA

“Friendly volunteers monitor Autumn migrating hawks at this location since at least 1969. Officially founded in 1971. A short hike from Rt 9W to the expansive view at top. More than a dozen species of raptor fly by, some at eye level, providing the so-called Hook look! Like this male kestrel by wildlife photographer S. Sachs.”
