The Blue Rock Inn

Address: 12567 Lee Hwy, Washington, VA 22747, USA

Lodging

“I'm giving this place 5 starts overall, because of the gorgeous location, warm and professional service, great value, and the fact that this place has SO much potential! My partner and I stayed here for 1 night so we could have dinner at the Inn at Little Washington (which is superlative and totally worth the hype) in nearby Washington, VA, and we didn't want to have to drive to/from our home in DC. October must be high season in this area, as it was near impossible to find a hotel, motel, inn or AirBnB that had a room for only one night (many enforced a multi-night min. and/or were already booked up). Oddly, The Blue Rock Inn is not on any of the usual hotel booking sites, and it was only through a Google Maps search that we found out about it. The Maitre'd at the restaurant asked where we were staying and when we mentioned The Blue Rock, he wistfully explained that it had once been "the" place to stay and eat while The Inn at Little Washington was coming into its own. Sadly, the Blue Rock Inn has fallen on hard times, its own restaurant and bar closed, and the vast property include picturesque hills and a pond, now listed for sale. Despite the somewhat shabby grounds, the innkeeper Donna is beyond lovely. She made us feel instantly welcome, and prepared a delicious hot breakfast. The local apple cider was a real treat. Our upstairs room was more than adequate, bed quite comfortable, and we were pleased to find that they had excellent hot water, and much needed free wifi (no cell service in this part of rural VA). The views of the nearby hillsides, a pond, vineyards and orchards, are truly spectacular The Inn must have a regular following (as indicated by one of the other 3 couples we met at breakfast who were return guests) and like us, were willing this place to return to its former glory. If only you had a few spare millions of $$$? In short, If you are in need of a clean, cozy and economical B&B with a healthy dose of potential, this is the place while visiting Washington or Sperryville, VA.... We'll be back!”

“Don't get me wrong, the food in the restaurant was outstanding. Everything was just so, and perfectly cooked. Tender meats, and the foie gras was unbelievable. Worthy of Michelin's recognizance to be sure. Here's the thing. I think I could get a meal elsewhere that's 99% as good for a lot less money. You really do get a lot of high quality food for the price. But I think it would only be a bargain at about half the going rate. If you can't afford it, you can approximate for cheaper. You're always going to pay for three Michelin stars though.”

Foster Harris House

Address: 189 Main St, Washington, VA 22747, USA

Lodging

“My wife and I had an amazing time at the Foster Harris House! The historical home has a warm charm to it, and is walking distance to many great spots in Little Washington. The best part of the stay is the service and humor from the owner/operator, Klaus. We can't wait to go back!”

The Inn at Little Washington

Address: 309 Middle St, Washington, VA 22747, USA

Lodging

“We're so used to a "5-star" system that Michelin's three stars seems out of place. To better understand, a Michelin one star will trounce most of our regular 5-star ratings hands down. Adding two more Michelins, well, that's simply in another league all by itself. It's the only Michelin 3-star in the DC area and it's an hour and a half away! That's a LOT of area restaurants it bests, by a long, long shot. It's a charming Inn that's both elegant and quaint. Attention is paid to absolutely every detail and the staff are everywhere and nowhere all at the same time. They are polite and diligent, always proper yet relaxed. It's absolute perfection. The food is unconsciously perfectly balanced with every bite of every dish. How you can do that over and over again is beyond me and the culmination of absolute discipline and passion honed over years. Michelin is absolutely correct, it's worth going out of your way for -- This truly is one of America's top food experiences.”

Gay Street Inn

“My wife and I spent my birthday at this amazing little B & B! Drew and Deb were incredibly accommodating, flexible, and inviting. Gay Street Inn is a stone's throw away from The Inn at Little Washington, so after dinner, stop by the living room before retiring and enjoy some chocolate and a glass of port! Breakfast the following morning was scrumptious and made with love. Drew is SO accommodating, he was willing to drop what he was doing to help us return home when we encountered issues with transportation. This place should be on your "Must List"!”

The second time we went here she'd been experimenting with gluten-free flour and dairy substitutes and made us a fantastic coffee cake that worked with my allergies. We will definitely be back!”

Fairlea Farm Bed & Breakfast

Address: 636 Mt Salem Ave, Washington, VA 22747, USA

“Fairlea Farm’s bucolic setting and charming house made for a wonderful stay. The hosts are very warm and welcoming. The homemade breakfast was superb. All the recipes have been passed down in the family. In fact, Susan has a cookbook of her family’s recipe in the foyer for guests to view. If you’re planning on dinner at the Inn at Little Washington, be sure to talk to Walt prior to going. He has many great tips that will make for a memorable experience. From the farm, it’s a pleasant 10 walk to the Inn.”

Greenfield Inn Bed and Breakfast

Address: 30 September Song Lane, Washington, VA 22747, USA

Lodging

“My girlfriend and I were looking for a short quick half-weekend getaway from DC at the last minute, and happened upon the Greenfield Inn the night before. Their reservation system worked flawlessly, and from the moment we arrived (a mere ~90 minute drive - a beautiful one - from DC) the entire experience was an absolute delight. The innkeepers were extremely kind and gracious, and the accommodations at the inn were beautiful yet practical. The house had a classic farmhouse design yet was quietly equipped with modern amenities (e.g., USB charging ports in the room, high-pressure shower, central air conditioning, etc.). Audrey and Al made wonderful recommendations and provided a delightful breakfast. Perhaps the most stunning feature of the experience was the gorgeous - and expansive - property on which the inn sits. It is an enormous farm with a cabal of animals (including horses and cows) that we were free to explore as we wished. Closer to the home, there are countless beautiful sitting areas to just enjoy the outdoors. I couldn't have envisioned a better experience than the one we had. We have already recommended the Greenfield Inn to numerous friends just a day after our visit, and we'll be planning our own returns visits as well.”
