“At the moment I entered the establishment, I was greeted by a sweet young lady (whether barmaid or publican, I did not ask) who we found to be very knowledgeable and personable. She proceeded to relate to us the events of John Brown’s raid and it’s affect on the community, as well as the period up to and after the war, and how her pub was often central to these events – as a simple escape from the turmoil over a shot of whiskey, provide for social gathering to debate such events, or even to conspire plans to aid in the advancement of one side or the other. Warning, be under no illusions that her charm and attraction means she is simple or meek – she can quickly quench a drunken brawl, as well as pummel the best in an aggressive game of checkers.”

“This is the best museum of the park, it contains a lot of info about John Brown, some of his most remarkable quotes, an extensive timeline of his life, three film stops chronicling important phases of his life , the different perspectives about him from other eminent remarkable figures of that time, some of the guns and ammo used in the historic raid and also several images of John Brown at various ages of his life, this is mind blowing and absolutely stunning”

“Nice spot to check out U.S. military history in a beautifully (and historically) preserved town. Learn how manufacturing occurred long, long ago.”

“Kind of a humbling experience thinking about John Brown and reading about him. This of course going to where he was and experiencing what was going through his mind around the raid of the fort just makes it very somber. Just trying to think about him and be in his shoes! He was definitely an extreme abolitionist and may have gone about it in the wrong way, but he is definitely worth looking up and studying!”

“There's not much to see or appreciate at first glance but the information boards really help fill the gap, allowing visitors to imagine the size and scope of the arsenal in its heyday. With enough funding, they may be able to commit to a faithful reconstruction of the arsenal, based on archaeological findings and historical archives.”

“This is a historic place that can easily be missed because it's a small door in between the Provost military center and the information center, it also has a look at the insides of the military center from the bottom followed by stairs which leads to the actual boarding that Mrs Stipes , a widow of three children run, there are well preserved rooms upstairs with some historic furniture and also a look at the officers room aside”

“Great hike and beautiful views. It cuts in to the Appalachian Trail. Not a very busy hike it can be a bit of a hike if your not use to hiking. About a 6 and half mile hike. It’s a great day hike. You get a little different view of the town then maryland heights.”
