“In 1835 Edward Bligh, the 5th Earl of Darnley, attempted to demonstrate to some of his estate workers the correct way to use an axe. In the process he severed one of his toes, and died of tetanus some days later. Lady Darnley had a stone monument erected at the spot where the accident took place, surrounded by eight yew trees - this became known as the 'toe monument'. Since then the site has become overgrown and much damaged by vandalism and neglect. All that now remains are a few stones surrounded by the now considerably larger yew trees.”

“I enjoyed my time here looking at the vessel close up and taking photos, looking out across the river. It is quite a social location, people were sitting around on the benches chatting and families having a bite to eat. A pleasant afternoon.”

“Lovely 2 hrs at the enchanted woodland, lots of creative play with plenty of arts and crafts activities to keep a 4 and 5 year old amused. They loved decorating wands, making potions. Chasing the goblins and the games were fun. Loved the bow and arrows, crossbow and slingshot which made their day”

“I thought this was interesting, if noisy, and worth the walk (but be aware that as it’s downhill all the way there, it’s a long climb back up again!). My 8 year old enjoyed it; I don’t think the 5 year old understood what it was all about.”

“We have all heard that the Romans had lovely mosaics and heated there houses in clever ways but it is something special to see the remains in the flesh. And it is nicely displayed and looked after by English Heritage. You won't need hours there but you can walk nearby in ancient woods and enjoy a bite in the cafe too.”

“We went here today. This place is a truly fabulous and delightful little gem! I can’t recommend it enough. Firstly it has been put together through love and having a keen interest in the RAF. It is quirky and there are some great anecdotes. What definitely makes it stand out is the amazing volunteers. Thanks to Norman, Ray and Dean for a great experience and the time you spent with us telling us all of the different stories. So interesting and informative. On top of that there’s a lovely little garden area and a tea house - the food is lovely and so is the lady running it. Time very well spent and will visit again / tell my friends to come by. Thank you! (For those not from Kent, Shoreham in is a lovely example of a Kent Village too).”
