“It's a fun little older hotel to stay at. The pool is amazing and the hot tub was awesome! The hardware was old and the bathroom and beds are a bit rough but overall it is an incredibly great little hotel for the price! If you're on a budget, this hotel will not disappoint and the view of the ocean is just fantastic. Staff were nice too! They let us check in 3 hours early. Really enjoyed the 10-day stay and highly recommend the Schooner for budget-conscious travelers.”

“This is one of the last independent beachfront motels that hasn't been mowed down for a boring, character-stripped chain. Other reviewers are right, it's dated... In the best way possible. Charm to the brim. And super clean. And super friendly staff. And perfect beach views perfectly centrally located on the boardwalk. Breakfast isn't included but it's so affordable you can easily go to any of the great little diners in the area. We'll definitely be back.”

“We just spent two nights in the 2 bedroom cabin and I was beyond pleased! The cabin was cute and clean and had everything we needed! The atmosphere is quiet and very friendly! They have an in resort pizza shop with pizza wings and ice cream! The pizza was amazing! Will definitely refer anyone headed this way to stay here!”

“We had a great 4 night stay. With a family of 4, we had 2 kings beds and plenty of room. We loved the adjoining room with my parents. Rooms was clean. Staff was super friendly and breakfast was wonderful with something different every morning. Breakfast staff were so friendly every morning. The only recommendation I have is keeping breakfast open until at least 10 or 10:30. People like to sleep in while they are on vacation and it was hard to try and wake my 2 kids by 8:30 or 9 to ensure we would get to eat breakfast. Painting in rooms also needs updated, but other than that, we had a great stay and I will definitely be staying there again.”

“To explain how great The Modern Barn is I'll say this: we booked a getaway to relax on the beach, but the Barn was so great we didn’t go to the beach once during the entire stay (although it’s only a 12 min drive). A definite 11/10. The moment we got to the house, Travis reached out and gave us a tour of the property, as well as shared his knowledge of the best local places for going out. The house was even better than described. The gigantic game room had our family staying up well into the night engaging in competitions. When not in the game room, we spend a lot of time in the wonderful swimmable Koi pond. There is so much to do and so much to experience at The Modern Barn. The attached Loft is also perfect to provide both unity and privacy if two families are staying. We really enjoyed the amazing and informative conversations we had with Travis throughout our stay. You can really tell that Travis and Jen put their heart and soul into The Modern Barn and it is very much appreciated! Thank you guys for a wonderful and memorable getaway. We will be back.”

“Loved the way we were welcomed by a smile, and treated as important guests by all the staff. We arrived early, and accommodated immediately. We stayed three nights in room 405 which was huge and sits on the corner of the hotel. This room had a couch and a nice balcony where you could see the ocean in the distance. It is on a busy street, but high enough that the traffic did not bother us. Not a fancy hotel, but great price and had more of a family atmosphere, than a party crowd. Free parking upstairs and free covered parking downstairs. We did not have any trouble finding a place to park. Very close to Doheny Beach, Dana Point and plenty of places to eat. Continental breakfast is boxed juice, coffee and packaged danish, but the size of the room, price and location make up for not having a full breakfast. Fridge, microwave and coffee maker included in room. We would absolutely stay here again, especially in the same room.”

But the menu was different than they shared with us a day ago and the service was delayed than the time communicated to the contact person. On the good side, the atmosphere was really pleasant. “Stayed here everytime Old Dominion started and ended classes for the year for about 3 years. My daughter was living on campus and we would stay in the area a few days after moving her in or out. I was just looking over the reviews and mind you I haven't stayed since May of 2019 but it was nothing like most of these reviews are describing. I know things change quickly and the pandemic wasn't kind to a lot of businesses. I hope they have in the near future, I'm almost anxious enough to book a stay just to see how much of the bad reviews are true or not. I thought it was fine. Nothing special or fancy but decent as heck price and it was never nasty and dirty. Close enough to walk to the beach without exerting yourself, I quick stroll, good for you but not one you'd be annoyed by if you were on vacation or what have you. I hate the rating they have ATM and hope very much that they are successful in the future and can get people on board with helping that change. What a bummer?! I hope this review helps in some way, probably won't considering I haven't been in a while, but I do think it's worth trying because in my opinion they deserved it during my time. I brought several different friends with me throughout years staying and they all agreed with me about the stay there and how they are shocked that any of this could be true. Things happen though and if so that's terribly sad, also if so maybe seeing this post will help them understand that desperate and drastic changes need to be made immediately and taken seriously or they could see a fate that is just as nasty as some of the bad reviews. Anyway, good luck Motel on 21st Street. I have faith you can fix this.”
