“This is a hidden gem. Loved walking around and reading each headstone. Many have fallen over and are broken, unfortunately. However, seeing headstones above ground was truly wonderful. Most cemeteries in California do no have headstones above ground, in an effort to avoid vandalism. Seeing the ornate headstones was truly a treat though. I highly recommend if you enjoy history and a good walk around a peaceful place.”

“Mt. Sinai is very quiet..... and well maintained. As with many Jewish Cemeteries, it's on the decline a bit; Jews no longer live in the area and few people come to visit. Younger children for the most part have moved away or choose cremation these days. It's sad, but dont expect "special treatment" just because you decided to stop by...... There are usually few staff to help you - and sometimes only one. They will readily provide you with the location of the grave(s) you are looking for and there is a large map on the wall as you enter the Office - the Cemetery is very well laid out on a grid pattern with the sections noted (A, B, C, etc) and the individual plots. NOTE: Just keep in mind that each plot on the map is for SIX graves so you cant just count what appears to be three "rows" of plots from the road on the map - since there are at least TWO rows within a single plot - once you figure it out, it's pretty easy to find the graves/stones you are looking for.”

“Sexton Mr. Terry Fischer was very patient with me today as I looked at plots and settled on a plot I love. He is a direct descendant of the Fischer Family who settled the area in the 1800s. The cemetery was created by the donation of 30 acres of land by Otto Fischer in 1886. There are people buried here from before the civil war. The graves from the creation of Canyon Lake were moved here, too (reintured). This is a historically preserved cemetery and is on the National Register of Historic Places by the United States Departent of the Interior. The cemetery is owned by the Fischer Cemetery Association, PO Box 52, Fischer, TX 78623.”

He gave me a great deal of information and helped me make informed decisions. At the end, my family decided to have dad buried in Israel, so I didn’t get to have the funeral here, but I would recommend La Puerta very highly for their sensitivity to the planet, and to us, trying to Help us bury our dead with dignity.”
